Bake the cake according to package directions in a 9×13-inch pan. While hot, poke holes all over the cake using the handle of a wooden spoon. In a saucepan, heat pineapple with sugar until dissolved, then pour evenly over the hot cake. Let cool completely. Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until smooth, then fold in whipped topping. Spread over cooled cake and sprinkle with pecans if desired. Chill before serving.
